Origin of SLRKK

Founding a Sri Lankan cultural organization for the benefit of expatriate Sri Lankan community living in the D.C metro area had been envisioned by a very few Sri Lankans as far back as 1982. The legacy of Sri Lanka Ranga Kala Kavaya begins from dreams and the longing of one art-loving individual who lived in Falls Church Virginia. It was none other than Mr. Rohana Senaratne who had anticipated forming a cultural organization exclusively to promote Sri Lankan culture among expatriate Sri Lankans and Americans living in Greater D.C metro area. However it is not clear in what year this pioneering group was created. Some believe it was 1982 and others think it was 1984. This aesthetically enthusiastic energetic group formed by Mr. Rohana Senaratne later evolved into a nonprofit organization that we now recognize as Sri Lanka Ranga Kala Kavaya (SLRKK) today.

Initially functioning as an informal ad-hoc group for sometime, they had considered registering the organization in the year 1990, and eventually it was recognized by the authorities under section 501 (C) (3) as a non-profit organization in 1992. SLRKK activities are organized exclusively for charitable, cultural and educational purposes, according to the provisions of Section 501 (c) (3) that includes, making contributions and distributions for such purposes.

Currently SLRKK functions as a charitable organization concentrating primarily within the sphere of sharing culture; but planning to expand its boundaries of activities into the educational sector in Sri Lanka in near future.
