Brief History of Sri Lanka Ranga Kala Kavaya (Sri Lanka Dramatic Art Circle)

Culture is one of the most fluid and constantly changing concepts of humanity but strangely enough, there are some solid substances in every culture that are immune to external influence preserving and exemplifying the uniqueness of the identity of people belonging to it. The Sri Lankan culture possessed such resilient and solid components that had been brought to the United States of America (USA) by Sri Lankans who migrated here over the past four to five decades. This encouraged one individual, Mr. Rohan Senaratne, who was keen to sustain our cultural identity here by forming a cultural organization for the expatriate community. At the beginning, few arts loving Sri Lankans had supported Rohana’s idea way back in 1982. The legacy of Sri Lanka Ranga Kala Kavaya begins from this initial artistic group formed by Mr. Rohana Senaratne, which later evolved into a nonprofit organization that is recognized today as the Sri Lanka Ranga Kala Kavaya (SLRKK).

With 25 years of history as a registered nonprofit organization and another eight years of early history as an unregistered cultural group, SLRKK has lasted for three decades, permitting it to claim its position in the history as the oldest and the largest Sri Lankan cultural organization in the east coast of USA. During past 25 years, SLRKK has been able to make a colossal contribution to the Sri Lankan community living in USA and to our motherland in many ways. The most important contribution is the fact that SLRKK has been able to connect Sri Lankan diaspora with their motherland through relentless cultural interventions.

In the original SLRKK group, there were members that had already achieved some accomplishments in music and drama/theater field. Mr. Himaransi Ranasinghe, Rohana’s brother-in-law had involved in music and played many instruments including the ‘Tabla’. Mr. Rohana senaratne is also a talented Harmonium player and a student of Prof. Ediriweera Sarathchandra, the eminent Sinhala playwright and dramatist who created some of the greatest Sinhala theatrical plays in Sri Lanka including Sinhabahu and Maname. Subsequently in addition to the Sitarist John Bell, Mr. Chandrasinghe de Saram, another gifted Sitarist also joined in making the group having a full-scale oriental orchestra. As the result of dedication and hard work of these pioneering individuals, "Manusha," was launched within few months depicting Thakka Jathakaya of Buddhist 550 Jathakas.

Mr. Hemnath De Silva, now living in Bristow, Virginia, had played the main role in this play while Mrs. Aloka Pieris Hettiarachchi had played the main actress’s role. Mr. K. B. Ekanayake, Mr. S. A. D. Subasinghe, Mr. Dayananda Weerakkody, Mr. Dias Amarawardane, Mr. Upali Ekanayake, and Mr. Kithsiri Gammanpila played other roles while the chorus was comprised of Mrs. Kusum Amarawardane, and Mrs. Sandhya Obeysekara.

During this time a nephew of Mr. Rohana Senaratne, Mr. Saman Jayaweera, now living in Virginia and currently serving SLRKK as an advisor, helped to resolve many logistical problems by supplying with all what organization needed from Sri Lanka including but not limited to traditional musical instruments.

It is uncertain whether the first play Manusha was staged in 1983 or 1984. Some memories of earlier works have been forgotten but according to many well-known people, Manusha must have been staged either in late 1983 or early 1984. After the production of Manusha, Mr Rohana Senaratne went on to produce dramas such as Dhikthala and Kalagola and Ditta Mangalika. Mrs. Nayana Galpotthawela had played a prominent role in the drama Ditta Mangalika. Under the protection and patronage of this resourceful group of people with extraordinary talents and creativity, SLRKK evolved with dignity, eventually to become the largest cultural organization in eastern USA.

Since the first group started their activities as a makeshift assembly to fulfill specific task of the production of dramas, the financial contributions they wanted to make for the D.C Buddhist temple needed to have an entity with a proper legal standing. At this juncture, Mr. Rohana Senaratne discussed with the group and other community members and they decided to register an organization called Sri Lanka Ranga Kala Kavaya in the year 1990. Eventually SLRKK was recognized by the authorities under section 501 (C) (3) as a non-profit organization in 1992.

Since then, SLRKK activities are organized exclusively for charitable, cultural and educational purposes. According to the provisions of Section 501 (C) (3) SLRKK is legally allowed to make contributions and distributions for such purposes.

Sri Lanka Ranga Kala Kavaya has displayed its commitment for the last three decades by propagating and upholding Sri Lankan culture. It has acted as a forceful unit to defend our motherland at times of need including the greatest disaster of the millennium, the 2004 Tsunami.

At present, most of SLRKK events are related to presenting musical shows, drama and movies of Sri Lankan origin. Currently SLRKK is functioning as a charitable organization concentrating primarily within the sphere of culture, but planning to expand its boundaries of activities into charity work in the educational sector in the near future.

In 2015 under the leadership of the new President of SLRKK, Mr. Hemantha Ratnayake and its Secretary, Mr. Geethanjana Kudaligamage with full commitment of current executive committee and the board of directors as per given in the schedule below, have achieved several crucial developments especially in reestablishing SLRKK’s original vision and mission firmly into the spirit and operations. In addition to spreading their tentacles into wider experience of culture and administration, SLRKK has recently been able to sponsor artists from Sri Lanka. The latter aspect is of historical significance, as this is the first time that SLRKK has been able to directly sponsor reputed artists from Sri Lanka to entertain our community in USA.

In addition to that, current administration of SLRKK firmly believes that the organization must be further strengthened to function strictly within the framework of nonprofit traditions and spirit to become a community organization with a strong sense of credibility, transparency and accountability.
